George Gach Born in Budapest, Hungary, and son of the eminent Hungarian sculptor, Stephen Gach, George was initially imbued with the classical traditions of the Beaux-Arts. He apprenticed under his father’s tutelage until the age of 18, and then attended the Fine Arts Academy in Budapest, where he later became an assistant professor. As a pilot during World War II, Gach was shot down and imprisoned by the Russian Army. He escaped and returned to Budapest. |

In 1952, Gach relocated his family to the United States and devoted himself entirely to his painting, sculpting, and art instruction. From his traditional and classical background in the arts, his own brand of impressionism and realism began to emerge as he enjoyed the development and maturation of his talent and expertise as a painter and sculptor. From 1959-1969, Gach traveled widely in Mexico, spending a great deal of that time in the state of Guanajuato, particularly San Miguel de Allende. His representational oil paintings of San Miguel and elsewhere in Guanajuato provide a historical glimmer of Central Mexico some 40 years ago. Gach’s paintings provide us a bridge to look back at nostalgic old-world ways and look ahead to the ever-advancing modern, new-world Mexico.
